Chat, badges & emotes

Live chat is where viewers talk during a stream. Sign in to participate.

Chatting

Type in the chat box and press Enter to send.
Your badges appear next to your name.
You can pick a chat name colour in your profile settings or with the /color command.
Type / to use chat commands — whisper someone, set your colour, and more.

Mentions

Type @ followed by a few letters to mention someone. The suggestion list only offers people who have actually chatted in that channel recently — it will never suggest a name that hasn’t spoken.

When someone mentions you, your own message row is tinted so you can spot it while scrolling. There’s no sound or notification for a mention.

Badges

Badges sit to the left of your name in chat. There are three kinds:

Role badges — broadcaster, moderator, staff. These are automatic and always shown first.
Subscriber and donor badges — earned by subscribing or donating to a channel.
Custom badges — occasional badges granted by staff (for example, to early supporters).

Choosing which badge to wear

Select the badge icon next to the emote picker in the chat box to open Chat Identity. There you can:

Pick a global badge — worn everywhere, including in whispers.
Optionally set a different badge for this channel only.

Role badges can’t be turned off — your custom badge is shown alongside them.

The first-time chatter label

The very first message someone ever sends in a channel is marked with a First-time chatter label and a subtle highlight, so the community and moderators can welcome (or watch) them. It isn’t a badge you keep — it appears once and never again in that channel.

Emotes

Channels can have their own emotes. Subscriber emotes are unlocked when you subscribe to that channel. Type an emote’s code or pick it from the emote menu. Emotes can be animated.

Who’s in chat

Select the people icon in the chat header to see the chatter list, grouped by role: broadcaster, staff, moderators, VIPs, then viewers.

Replies

Reply to a message to keep a conversation clear: hover a message and choose Reply. Your reply shows a small badge with the original author’s name and a snippet, and clicking that badge jumps to the original message. Donation messages can’t be replied to.

Pinned messages

A moderator can pin one message to the top of chat so everyone sees it — for example stream rules or a link. There’s one pin at a time (a new pin replaces the old one), and it clears automatically after a timer (20 minutes by default) or when the stream ends.

Translation

If the platform has translation switched on, chat messages and stream titles written in another language can be translated for you inline. A small language icon appears next to translated text — select it to flip between the original and the translation.

You control this from Account → Profile:

Translate chat and Translate titles — your defaults everywhere.
Never translate these languages — languages you already read, which always stay in the original.

You can also override the setting for one channel: chat gear icon → Chat Settings → Translate this chat (Default / Always / Never).

Chat modes

Creators and moderators can enable modes that change who can chat:

Subscriber-only — only subscribers (and staff) can send messages.
Slow mode — a cooldown between messages.
Followers-only — only followers can chat, sometimes after a minimum follow time.
Emote-only — messages must be made of emotes.
Unique chat — blocks repeated or copy-pasted messages.
Chat delay — everyone except moderators is held back by a few seconds. You’ll see your own message immediately; other viewers see it after the delay.
Shield mode — see below.

If you can’t send a message, one of these is likely active — subscribing or following may unlock it.

When a message doesn’t appear

A few things can quietly stop a message:

“Your message contains a blocked term.” — the creator has a word filter on that channel. Nothing happens to your account; reword and try again.
“Your message is being reviewed by a moderator.” — the channel holds certain messages (links, first-time chatters, flagged terms) for review. It posts if a moderator approves it, and is dropped if nobody acts within the channel’s time limit.
Chat delay — it’s already sent, just not visible to everyone yet.

VIP

A creator can grant trusted viewers VIP status. VIPs get a VIP badge and can chat through slow mode and followers-only mode. (VIP isn’t the same as moderator — VIPs have no moderation powers. VIPs are still subject to the channel’s blocked-terms filter.)

Moderation & conduct

Moderators can time out, ban, warn, or remove messages.

Timeout — a temporary mute. You keep watching and see a countdown, plus the reason if the moderator gave one.
Ban — you can’t post in that channel any more. The reason is shown if one was given. Bans are per-channel.
Warning — chat is replaced with the warning and its reason, and an Acknowledge button. Read it and acknowledge to start chatting again. A moderator can also lift a warning without you acknowledging it.
Deleted messages — hidden from other viewers, and restorable by a moderator for a short window if it was a mistake.

Shield mode is a raid/spam defence a creator can switch on. While it’s active the channel’s chat modes get stricter, and messages containing terms the creator has listed result in an immediate permanent ban. If you’re banned during a raid and think it was collateral damage, contact the channel’s moderators.

Whispers

Messages in the top bar opens your whispers. From there you can search for a user, open an existing conversation, or mark everything read. Conversations open as small chat windows in the corner of the page and stack, so you can keep several going while you watch.

Popout chat

Open the chat gear icon → Popout Chat to move chat into its own window — useful on a second monitor. While the popout is open, the chat panel on the stream page pauses; close the popout and it comes straight back.
